I agree with Ron, this begs What I should point out, however, is that it is also a Hard Science Fiction novel, and the authors provide an interesting and believable scientific basis for everything that happens. The concept of the samlon the local fish turning into grendels was terribly predictable. Now I find that very disturbing, not that humanity does not need to colonize, but that consideration of alien life and the ethics of such a push needs attention.
I hear about colonizing mars, and living in a bubble, but the thrill of an adventure like starting a new earth on a planet that no other human had ever set foot on would be just so far away from the experience that most people would ever have in their life that it is hard to imagine.

One person found this helpful. Larry niven and Jerry Pournelle are great hard science fiction writers and With Steven Barnes they have great combat and martial arts scenes.
The adult grendels are female. I like this one and at least for now don’t want to read a disappointing follow up. Niven, Pournelle, and Barnes have done an excellent job crafting the science and technology of the people, as well as creating very intriguing and convincing characters. Though, the colonists manage to kill it, turns out there are more on their island. It is left to the reader to draw conclusions as to what actually happened.
If it weren’t for the characters, this may not have been so bad. The main characters were related real well. Some are only mildly afflicted, while others have intellectual disability ; eight cannot be reanimated at all.

Listened to on CD. He did a year of graduate work in mathematics at the University of California at Los Angeles. I simplified the geometry a bit, brought it into Zbrush, and worked in Zbrush and Pshop to detail the creature.

Sorry to send so many questions but it is such a successfl piece. All ended a bit suddenly, and not quite logically in my view. Anyway, they land on this world and in their mind it is a paradise, and after a number of surveys they believe that there isn’t actually anything hostile on this world, that is until a nasty monster comes along and starts ripping everything apart. Their intelligence and reasoning skill are damaged.
